In the Channel Islands, close to Normandy, my native region. A hermit, Alphonse Le Gastelois, lived in the Ecrehous archipelago a few miles from Jersey, subsisting entirely on seaweed, lobsters and some seagull eggs. Sentenced for a crime he did not commit, he lived completely alone on his island for 14 years. He declared himself "King of the Ecrehous" in 1971, claiming that status pursuant to Norman Law after ten years continuous habitation and wrote to the Queen asking for her recognition (in her capacity as Duke of Normandy). Without success. He died in 2012 in Jersey, aged 97.
